The McAlpine Dance Studio...
...opened in Stockwell in 1972 and
moved to Longfield Hall in 1993. Donald and his wife Phyllida, having
danced for many years with the Royal Ballet and London's
Festival Ballet (now called English National Ballet), wanted to pass on
their knowledge and passion for dance... they have been doing it for
thirty nine years!
The School offers classes in a wide variety of dance genres,
as well as singing and drama, all with highly qualified teachers.
It currently has more than 150 pupils ranging in age from infants
under five to senior students in their eighties.
Students participate in regular performances at Longfield
Hall and in local community arts productions. The School also stages a
major show biennially, with profits going to charity. In recent years
these performances have been at the Secombe Theatre in Sutton.
Selected
students in two age groups form the Saturday Stage Club which is a
very popular feature of the School, encouraging an all round
musical theatre approach. The success of the Saturday Club has recently led to the creation of a Stage Club on Thursdays for younger students.
Many former
students have been awarded scholarships to full-time vocational schools
and have been accepted into ballet and dance companies.
The
School provides instruction to students at various levels from hobby to
R.A.D. and I.S.T.D. Certificate standards
and Spanish Dance Society examinations. It is dedicated above all to
the appreciation, beauty and craft of dance and music. |
